Tuesday July 20, 2004,
Reuven Feuerstein
developed the theory of Structural
Cognitive Modifiability (SCM) as a result of his work with deprived refugee
children after the World War. He postulates that the limits to learning are as
a matter of principle not known a priori. Cognitive development is at the basis
of all learning: school, vocational and social. It is not determined by hereditary,
congenital conditions or by socio-economic aspects, but is the result of
adequate Mediated Learning Experience
(MLE). From this theory, a practical cognitive intervention method
(Instrumental Enrichment), dynamic assessment method (Learning Propensity
Assessment Device) and a set of didactic tools have been elaborated both for
children with special needs, educationally disadvantaged children and for
mainstream educational systems. They have been translated in over 20 languages
and are being practised by many pioneering projects all over the world,
including 12 countries of the European Union. The needs and challenges remain
enormous.
