Prof. Feuerstein and his staff will conduct comprehensive workshops to introduce educators, psychologists and other specialists to the theory and practice of Structural Cognitive Modifiability (SCM) and Mediated Learning Experience (MLE), developed by Prof. Reuven Feuerstein, and to train a cadre of experienced professionals in the use of dynamic assessment and Instrumental Enrichment intervention for their students’ or clients’ benefit.  This theory states that learning ability can be significantly enhanced, regardless of age, nature, cause or severity of condition.  Clinical observations over decades have shown that the development of thinking processes is highly dependent on the nature and quality of the interaction within which selected stimuli are mediated by parents, educators, etc.  All workshops incorporate an introduction or review of the theory of Structural Cognitive Modifiability and Mediated Learning Experience

Mediated Learning Experience for Parents                                      10-13 July

This introductory workshop is intended for those parents who wish to learn about the basic principles of the theory of structural cognitive modifiability and mediated learning experience and their applied systems.  An overview of the criteria of mediation, deficient cognitive functions will be given together with the illustration of how these theoretical tools can be used in assessment and intervention with special needs children.  Workshops on how to mediate to a child. Live demonstration of the Learning Potential Assessment Device. Duration: 16 hours (one evening and three mornings).

MLE Advanced Seminar for Clinicians                                                               10-13 July

Advanced seminar for clinicians will be given jointly by the ICELP and the Mariani Foundation for Pediatric Neurology (Milan). An intensive training program will be offered for clinicians who have completed the first level at least, of both the LPAD and the IE. This program is open to physicians, psychologists, speech and occupational therapists, clinical social workers, educational counselors and psycho-pedagogues who meet the specified requirements. The goal of the workshop is to present to experts in the field certain new ideas and applications which are among the most effective in the clinical and rehabilitation work currently being carried out according to the Feuerstein methodology. The approaches and applications specific to neurological and neuropsychological diseases will be addressed and presented in cooperation with a dedicated team working under the auspices of the Mariani Foundation.

Instrumental Enrichment for the Elderly                                      10-13 July

This new course responds to the growing need to prepare professionals to help elderly people at risk of cognitive deterioration. The use of the IE program with the elderly has three major goals: 1) Prevention of cognitive deterioration at the pre-clinical stage through involvement in cognitive exercises; 2) Slowing down the process of deterioration in people who already display the first signs of reduced cognitive agility; mediation of the feeling of competence with the aim of preventing anxiety associated with diminished cognitive performance; 3) Remediation of already deficient cognitive functions and operations in order to enhance the quality of life of people with advanced cognitive deterioration.

The course includes introduction to recent findings in the neuropsychology of the aging, methods of teaching IE to the elderly, and didactics of training  caregivers for the elderly in residential settings, day centers, and private practice. Pre-requisite: previous IE training at the level of Trainers I at least.

Learning Propensity Assessment Device (LPAD)

The LPAD is a system of dynamic assessment of cognitive modifiability, structured as a mediational interaction.  Its primary goal is to produce a sample of change in the cognitive structure of the individual to serve as an indicator of the individual’s learning potential and point out the optimal modes of necessary intervention.  LPAD can be applied as an individual clinical technique and with groups of children, adolescents and adults with diverse levels of functioning and differing etiological conditions.

LPAD I                                                                                          10-21 July

Focusing on individual clinical assessment, this workshop will comprise:

a. Intensive instruction in LPAD; the use of instruments and interpretation of results; b. Demonstration and practice in LPAD testing, emphasizing the cognitive processes involved, quality of evaluator-child interaction and the derivation of recommendations from the analysis of results.

LPAD II - Veterans                                                                          10-21  July

Admission to this workshop is limited to those previously trained in LPAD-1.  Applications should be sent to Prof. Feuerstein with letters of recommendation and relevant documentation from an authorized trainer as to previous certification and recognized LPAD supervision of adequate experience.  Topics included in this workshop:  Advanced theory of mediation for dynamic assessment;

Higher level LPAD instruments; Principles and techniques of group assessment; Analysis of profiles of modifiability; practical experience in individual assessment and report writing.

LPAD for Young Children (LPAD-B)                                                 10-21  July

A new training model includes the principles and techniques of using a new battery of tasks intended for pre-school children or children with severe developmental delay. Currently the battery which is still under construction, includes the following sub-tests: Part-Whole; Functional Part-Whole; Concept Formation; Progressions; Absurdities; Define the Problem; Puzzles; Spatial Orientation; Associative Function Memory; Part-Whole Associative Recall; Visual Transport; Picture Assembly; Reversal Test; Labyrinth; Segregation of Lines; Organization of Dots; Complex Figure.

LPAD Group Assessment                                                                                        10-15  July

This form of assessment is intended for large groups of learners such as whole school classes, groups of adults, others.  The group LPAD produces results suitable for analysis in terms of both individual modifiability and group modifiability profile.  An additional advantage of the group assessment is that it is closer to real-life class situations (as compared to one-to-one assessments).  The course will include a study of the group-version battery of LPAD tools,  analysis of the results at an individual and a group level, report-writing, and individual and group recommendations. The group LPAD battery includes: Organization of Dots, Raven Matrices, Set Variations, Trimodal Analogies, Complex Figure, Positional Learning, Lahi, Numerical Progressions, Organizer, RSDT. Prerequisite: LPAD-1. During the year ICELP will offer an internship in group LPAD in all countries where there are more than four participants (at an additional charge).

Instrumental Enrichment  (IE)

IE is an intervention program designed to modify the cognitive structure of students in classrooms and individually with diverse populations ranging from retarded performers to gifted underachievers and adult populations in industrial settings and continuing education.  The program aims at correcting deficient cognitive functions and enhancing the individual’s capacity to learn more effectively from direct exposure in formal as well as informal learning situations.
